Cleveland Heights has one of the most independent small business scenes in the region. The neighborhood districts around Coventry, Cedar Lee and Cedar Fairmount are full of locally owned shops, restaurants and studios, and the city has a large community of freelancers, consultants and landlords. I am Josh Katz, a CPA who grew up in Cleveland and has spent more than fifteen years keeping the books and filing the taxes for small businesses across the east side. If you run a business in Cleveland Heights and want an accountant who understands how it works here, this page is for you.
Who I work with in Cleveland Heights
A shop or restaurant needs sales reports, inventory and sales tax handled properly. A freelancer or consultant needs clean books and a plan for estimated taxes. A studio or practice needs reliable monthly numbers. And many Cleveland Heights landlords own a house or a small multifamily building and need rental income and expenses tracked the right way, separate from personal spending. I set up the books around how your business actually works.
What monthly bookkeeping includes
Whether you run a shop, a practice or a set of rental properties, the monthly work looks like this.
Reconciled accounts every month. Bank, credit card and loan statements tied out so the numbers are right.
Financial statements on schedule. A balance sheet and profit and loss statement you can read and use, delivered on time.
Payroll that matches the ledger. Your payroll provider, whether that is Gusto, ADP or another system, synced with your books so wages and payroll taxes are tracked correctly.
A CPA who answers the phone. Questions come up in July, not just in April. You get direct access to me.
Monthly bookkeeping starts at $350. Individual tax returns start at $800 and business returns start at $1,500. Every fee is flat and quoted before the work begins. You can see the full list on my services page.
Cleveland Heights taxes, handled locally
Cleveland Heights’ municipal income tax is administered by the Regional Income Tax Agency, known as RITA, at a rate of 2.25%. The city requires returns from businesses operating in Cleveland Heights and from property owners who receive rental income, which catches many landlords by surprise. Residents who work or earn income elsewhere also have credit rules to follow. I explain how that works in my guide to Ohio municipal income tax, RITA and CCA.
If your business has grown quickly, it is also worth checking where you stand on the Ohio Commercial Activity Tax. Many small businesses that once filed no longer need to.
Meet in person, or not
Most clients send documents electronically and meet by video, which keeps things simple. When you would rather sit down in person, my Beachwood office is a short drive from Cleveland Heights. You can read more about my background on the about page.
