Tax Preparation for Cleveland Small Businesses

Portrait of Josh Katz, CPA

Business and personal tax returns prepared by a Cleveland CPA, for a flat fee quoted before the work starts. Individual returns start at $800 and business returns at $1,500. If I also keep your books, the return is prepared from numbers I already trust, which is why most of my tax clients become bookkeeping clients and the other way around.

Returns I prepare

  • S corporations (Form 1120-S) including reasonable-compensation review, shareholder basis, and Ohio pass-through entity tax elections
  • C corporations (Form 1120), from single-owner consulting companies to multi-owner operating businesses. I have written a line-by-line Form 1120 guide if you want to see how it works
  • Partnerships and multi-member LLCs (Form 1065) with K-1s for every partner
  • Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs (Form 1040 with Schedule C), including home office, vehicle, and self-employed retirement deductions
  • Individuals and families, including rental property, investment income, equity compensation, and multi-state returns
  • Ohio and local returns: Ohio IT 1040 and IT 4708, RITA and CCA net profit and individual returns, school district tax, and the Commercial Activity Tax
  • Information returns: 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC filings for your contractors in January

What it costs

Every return is quoted as a flat fee before I start, based on the forms and schedules involved. Individual returns start at $800. Business returns (1120, 1120-S, 1065) start at $1,500. Multi-state filings, rental properties, and prior-year catch-up returns add to the quote, and you will know the number in advance. There is no hourly billing and no surprise invoice in April.

How tax season works with me

  1. January: you receive a short organizer and a secure upload link. Bookkeeping clients skip most of it because I already have the books.
  2. February to March: I prepare the return, send questions in one batch instead of a dozen emails, and walk you through the draft on a call if you want one.
  3. Review and e-file: you sign electronically and I file federal, Ohio, and municipal returns together. Estimated payment vouchers for the coming year come with the return.
  4. After filing: if a notice arrives from the IRS, Ohio, or RITA, send it to me. Responding to notices on returns I prepared is included.

Why owners switch to a local CPA

The returns I see from national chains and online software share the same problems: municipal returns never filed, Ohio pass-through entity elections missed, S corporation owners paying themselves nothing or everything, and depreciation schedules that stopped making sense years ago. Fixing those is where most of the savings come from. I have been preparing returns for Cleveland area businesses for more than fifteen years, my office is in Beachwood, and when something needs a conversation we have it in person.

Tax preparation and tax planning are different services

Preparing the return reports what already happened. Planning changes what happens next: entity choice, salary versus distributions, retirement contributions, equipment timing, and estimated payments through the year. Planning is a separate engagement, quoted on its own, so you only pay for it when you want it. If you want year-round help, bookkeeping plus a planning review in the fall is the combination that works best.

Frequently asked questions

Can you file my prior-year returns?

Yes. Unfiled or amended prior-year returns are quoted individually, and I handle the IRS and Ohio correspondence that usually comes with them.

Do I need to come to the office?

No. Everything can run through the secure portal and a phone call, but the office at 3401 Enterprise Pkwy in Beachwood is there if you prefer to sit down.

Do you file extensions?

Yes, and an extension to file is not an extension to pay, so I calculate the payment due with it.

What should I gather before we talk?

Last year’s return, year-to-date financial statements or your accounting file login, payroll reports, and any IRS or state letters you have received.
