Rocky River is a town of professional practices, restaurants and shops along Detroit Road and Old Detroit, real estate and financial offices, and a great many consultants and small firms run from a home office near the lake. I am Josh Katz, a Cleveland CPA with more than fifteen years of experience keeping the books and filing the taxes for small businesses across the region. My office is in Beachwood, and everything runs on secure cloud software, so working with a Rocky River business is no different from working with one next door.
Who I work with in Rocky River
Medical, dental, and therapy practices; law, design, and consulting firms; restaurants and specialty retailers; real estate agents and small landlords; and professionals who left a larger employer to run their own practice. Most are owner-run businesses that have outgrown a part-time bookkeeper or a spreadsheet and want clean monthly numbers and a tax return prepared from them.
What monthly bookkeeping includes
- Every bank, credit card, and loan account reconciled to the statement each month
- Transactions categorized correctly for Ohio and federal tax purposes
- Profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash summary by the 15th of the following month
- Merchant and patient-payment deposits tied out to the processor reports
- Payroll liabilities, owner draws, and 1099 contractors tracked all year
- A short monthly note on anything unusual, and questions answered within one business day
Rocky River’s city income tax
Rocky River’s municipal income tax is administered by RITA. A business files a net profit return with the city, withholds for employees who work there, and residents file their own individual municipal return, with credits for tax paid to the city where they work. Professionals who see clients in several suburbs, or who have staff working from home elsewhere, can owe in more than one municipality. I track that as part of the monthly work; the rules are explained in my guide to Ohio municipal income tax, RITA and CCA.
Practices and professional firms
For practices, the bookkeeping that matters is collections against production, provider compensation, and whether the retirement plan is being funded the way the plan document says. For consultants and solo professionals, the question is usually whether an S corporation election would save payroll tax and what a defensible salary looks like. Those are planning questions, and I raise them when the numbers say it is time, not only in April.
How we start
- A 20-minute call about the business, and read-only access to your accounting file and last year’s return.
- A written flat-fee quote within a day, with a separate price if prior months need catching up.
- Onboarding in the first two weeks: bank feeds connected, chart of accounts fixed, prior months reconciled.
- Statements by the 15th of every month after that, plus a short note on anything that needs your attention.
Pricing
Monthly bookkeeping starts at $350 and is quoted as a flat fee before work begins. Individual tax returns start at $800 and business returns at $1,500. Tax planning is a separate engagement. There is no hourly billing.
